Single-Stage Central AC: The Budget Tier

A single-stage central air conditioner runs at one fixed capacity, cycling fully on and off. It is the lowest-cost tier and still has to clear the 2023 regional SEER2 minimums.

A single-stage central air conditioner has one output level. The compressor is either running at full capacity or it is off, with nothing in between. It is the simplest and least expensive way to cool a home, and it sets the baseline against which two-stage and variable-speed systems are compared.

How single-stage operation works

A single-stage compressor has exactly two states. When the thermostat calls for cooling it runs at 100 percent, and when the setpoint is reached it stops entirely.

Both Carrier and Trane describe the on-or-off behavior the same way, which is the defining trait of this tier.

Comfort and temperature swings

Because a single-stage unit only knows full blast, it tends to overshoot and then shut down, which produces cycling. The room temperature drifts up until the next call for cooling.

Carrier attributes noticeable temperature swings and frequent cycling to this all-or-nothing pattern.

Humidity control

Dehumidification depends on runtime, and a single-stage unit that shuts off quickly removes less moisture than one that runs longer at a lower speed. This is why single-stage humidity control is treated as the baseline.

Trane notes two-stage systems pull moisture from the air more effectively than single-stage systems, and Carrier labels single-stage humidity control as standard.

The efficiency floor still applies

Choosing the budget tier does not exempt a system from federal minimums. A single-stage split system still has to meet the regional SEER2 floor set in 2023.

That means 13.4 SEER2 in the North and 14.3 SEER2 for smaller units across the Southeast, the same floors any split system must clear.
